Hokkaido wedding photos: pre-wedding shoots, elopements, prices and seasons
Hokkaido gives you scenery the rest of Japan can't: deep powder snow and white birch forests in winter, lavender and patchwork farmland around Furano and Biei in summer, and Mount Yotei above Niseko. It's also big, cold in winter and spread out, so the month you choose and how far you travel on the day matter more than in Kyoto or Tokyo. This guide compares Hokkaido pre-wedding photoshoots, elopements and chapel weddings using prices on providers' official sites, then covers seasons (from Japan Meteorological Agency data), photo rules at farms and fields, and getting around. Every source is listed at the end.

Pre-wedding shoot, elopement or wedding?
- Pre-wedding photoshoot (maedori): no ceremony, just photos in wedding clothes on location. This is what most Hokkaido studios sell, and it's the cheapest.
- Elopement: a small symbolic ceremony for the two of you, usually outdoors, planned by an English-speaking team with a photographer. Nomad Weddings says its ceremonies are symbolic and couples register legally at home; see is a wedding in Japan legally binding?
- Chapel or resort wedding: a ceremony at a venue such as Tomamu's Chapel on the Water or the seasonal Ice Chapel, with guests if you like.

nico nico photo, Heart Art, Nomad and Tomamu don't state on these pages whether tax is included; ask. nico nico photo charges travel fees outside Sapporo (from ¥20,000 for Niseko, Biei, Furano or Lake Toya with the photographer only). Palette adds ¥11,000 on weekends and holidays. Nomad's Niseko packages run only from mid-January to early March; photography-only coverage there starts from ¥400,000. Photographer-booking services Capture My Japan (from ¥60,500 for 1 hour, tax incl.) and Have a good Holiday also cover Hokkaido; Capture My Japan adds a ¥16,500 Hokkaido dispatch fee.
Why the prices are so far apart
- Outfits and styling: nico nico photo's ¥60,000 and FILLgraphy's ¥231,000 plans include no outfits; Palette, LA-VIE and FILLgraphy's ¥398,000 plan do.
- Distance: Palette prices by distance from the studio, from ¥132,000 for central Sapporo to ¥228,800 for Otaru Canal or Kamifurano Flower Land.
- Interpreter and car: included at FILLgraphy and LA-VIE; Palette says its staff use translation tools when needed.
- Planning a ceremony (Nomad, LANDRESS) costs far more than a photo session.
Where to shoot in Hokkaido
Sapporo and Otaru
The easiest base: most studios are here. Palette's Sapporo courses include Odori Park, Nakajima Park, the Former Hokkaido Government Office (the Red Brick Building), Sapporo Factory and Moerenuma Park, with the historic Hoheikan as an indoor option for rain or snow. Otaru's canal and old warehouses, lit by gas lamps in the evening, are a separate, longer course.
Furano and Biei
Summer flower fields and rolling farmland, and wide snowfields in winter. Palette's Asahikawa studio lets you choose three spots from Shikisai no Oka, the Blue Pond, Takushinkan, Chiyoda Farm, Hinode Park and Flower Land. Read the rules below before you plan: much of what you see is private farmland.
Niseko
Ski country under Mount Yotei, with some of Hokkaido's deepest snow (see the season table). Niseko Weddings and Nomad Weddings are both active here; Nomad runs Niseko elopements in winter only.
Tomamu
A self-contained resort in central Hokkaido with Tadao Ando's Chapel on the Water (all year) and the Ice Chapel, which stands only from about mid-January to mid-February. The FAQ warns that winter temperatures can drop below −20°C. Bookings open 1.5 years ahead, and a 10-day provisional hold is available. The plan pages are in Japanese; a Chinese page lists booking offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Hakodate
A harbour city in the south, a long way from Sapporo. FILLgraphy has a studio there, and its cherry blossoms come earlier than Sapporo's (see below).
Photo rules at farms and fields
- Biei: the town's tourism association says the famous patchwork hills are all farmers' private fields. Never step into a field (soil on shoes can spread crop disease), and in winter never walk onto snowfields: the snow covers growing wheat. Photograph only from paved roads or roads cleared of snow, move aside for cars, and don't fly drones without prior permission. It also states that unauthorised photography is prohibited.
- Farm Tomita (Nakafurano): bans photography for commercial purposes, tripods, drones and photos in a wedding dress or similar outfit, the last even for personal photos. Don't plan a dress shoot in its lavender fields.
- Where studios do shoot: Palette and LA-VIE list spots such as Shikisai no Oka and Kamifurano Flower Land in their plans, so ask your studio which places it has arranged rather than choosing a field you saw online.
Best season for Hokkaido wedding photos
| Month | Sapporo: deepest snow (normal) | Kutchan (Niseko): deepest snow | Sapporo daily high / low |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 15 cm | 36 cm | 8.7°C / 1.6°C |
| December | 47 cm | 99 cm | 2.0°C / −4.0°C |
| January | 76 cm | 155 cm | −0.4°C / −6.4°C |
| February | 95 cm | 181 cm | 0.4°C / −6.2°C |
| March | 82 cm | 170 cm | 4.5°C / −2.4°C |
| April | 22 cm | 101 cm | 11.7°C / 3.4°C |
JMA climate normals, 1991–2020. Kutchan is the JMA station nearest Niseko; its normal lows in January and February are about −9.5°C.
- Snow (December to March): the best odds of deep white scenery. February is the deepest in both Sapporo and Niseko.
- Lavender (July): Farm Tomita says early varieties colour from late June and peak in early to mid-July; harvesting ends by early to mid-August. Nomad calls July the sweet spot for Furano. In Sapporo, July's normal high is 25.4°C.
- Cherry blossoms (late April to May): JMA's normal full bloom is May 2 in Hakodate and May 6 in Sapporo; in 2026 they came on April 20 and April 24.
- Autumn leaves (October): JNTO's 2026 forecast put Sapporo's peak around October 28. FILLgraphy recommends kimono for the autumn colours.
- Nothing is guaranteed: LA-VIE FACTORY says seasonal scenery such as lavender and snow can't be guaranteed.
Getting around Hokkaido
Distances are the hidden cost of a Hokkaido shoot. Hoshino Resorts' own access page gives about 90 minutes by train from New Chitose Airport to Tomamu (Rapid Airport, then a limited express), about 100 minutes by train from Sapporo, and about 90 minutes by car from Furano. Niseko Weddings says that for weddings further away in Hokkaido, its team arrives the night before.
- Choose a plan with a car if you're leaving Sapporo. FILLgraphy includes a car and driver, Palette includes transport, and nico nico photo's styling plans include a car.
- Count the locations against the hours. In our view, one region per day is realistic: Sapporo and Otaru, or Furano and Biei, not both.
- Winter driving: Tomamu's guide warns of black ice on bridges and near tunnels and advises studless winter tyres. If you drive yourself, leave plenty of time; we'd let the studio drive on the shoot day.
Booking, weather and cancellation
- Weather: FILLgraphy decides from the forecast 3 days before (new date, area, time or indoors). nico nico photo discusses another date or location if the weather isn't suitable, and changes the date free when another date is available. Nomad doesn't reschedule for weather; in Niseko and Furano a sheltered option is an add-on.
- Cancellation: FILLgraphy charges 50% from 30 to 14 days before, 80% from 13 to 3 days and 100% within 3 days. nico nico photo keeps the deposit and charges 50% from 1 to 5 days before. LA-VIE takes 25% to book. Full terms are on each company's page in our studio database.
- Delivery: nico nico photo in about 3 weeks; LA-VIE about a month; FILLgraphy and Palette about 2 months (Palette ships products 1.5–2 months after the shoot).
- Lead time: LA-VIE asks for at least 2 months. Nomad says Niseko's peak winter weekends book 6–12 months ahead.
Staying warm on a winter shoot
These are our suggestions rather than studio rules. With daytime highs around 0°C in Sapporo and lower in Niseko, wear thermal layers under the dress where you can, keep a long down coat between shots, and bring snow boots with grip; change into dress shoes only for full-length photos. Daylight is short (Sapporo averages about 83 hours of sunshine in December), so ask what time hair and makeup starts. Tomamu's FAQ also recommends a scarf, gloves and a hat, and winter shoes for walking to the Chapel on the Water, which stands in the forest.
