Proposal in Japan: surprise proposal photographers, prices, places and rules
Proposing in Japan, at a Kyoto shrine, under Tokyo's cherry blossoms, with Mount Fuji behind you or in a Hokkaido snowfield, is a popular way to make a trip unforgettable. Many couples now hire a photographer who poses as a tourist, stays out of sight and captures the moment your partner turns around. A handful of photo services in Japan publish dedicated proposal plans: they help choose the spot and the timing, hide during the question and then take couple photos afterwards. This guide compares the four we found with proposal plans and prices on their official sites, then covers photo rules at popular places, seasons and how the day actually works. Every source is listed at the end.
Planning photos in Japan after the proposal?
Our studio database lists photographers' and studios' published prices, what's included, cancellation terms and rain policy in the same format, with links to the official pages.
Browse the studio database- Price: a 1-hour proposal shoot costs ¥31,000 to ¥95,000 (approx. US$200–600). The lowest is Have a good Holiday's Plan A, with 100 original photos and 10 retouched.
- Staying hidden: all four services say on their sites that the photographer hides or blends in as a passer-by, photographs the proposal from a distance and then takes couple portraits.
- Video: Have a good Holiday (from Plan B, ¥36,000) and every nico nico photo plan include a short video.
- Fastest photos: Ippei and Janine deliver on the same day; nico nico photo sends 10 previews the next day.
- Rules: Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto forbids wedding photo shoots, model shoots, tripods and drones. Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo doesn't allow paying a professional photographer for personal photos. Farm Tomita in Furano bans commercial photography.
US dollar figures are approximate, converted at the European Central Bank reference rates for October 30, 2026 (€1 = ¥175.68 = US$1.1172, so US$1 ≈ ¥157.25). You'll pay in yen.
How a proposal photoshoot in Japan works
The difference from an ordinary couple shoot is that one of you doesn't know it's happening. At Capture My Japan, for example, you send a request with the plan and area, a photographer is assigned and contacts you directly (LINE, Instagram, WhatsApp or email) to plan the spot, the surprise and even where to buy a bouquet. You pay once the details are settled, and the edited photos arrive by Google Drive.
On the day, the services describe much the same approach: the photographer hides or poses as a passer-by, captures the proposal from a distance, then joins you for a relaxed couple session. nico nico photo in Hokkaido shares real examples on its site. In one, the photographer and an assistant pretended to be tourists photographing birds in a Sapporo park, offered to take the couple's picture, then asked them to stand back to back, which gave the proposer a moment to get the ring ready.
Proposal photography prices compared (4 services)
Only services with a proposal plan or a dedicated proposal page with prices are included, sorted by lowest price. The order has nothing to do with partnerships. All four are photography only: no outfits and no hair and makeup (nico nico photo offers hair and makeup as an add-on).
| Service (area) | Proposal plans (official site) | Approx. US$ | What's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Have a good Holiday (30+ areas in Japan) | Plan A from ¥31,000 / B from ¥36,000 / C from ¥51,000 / D from ¥72,000 | $200–460 | A: 1 hour, 100 originals + 10 retouched. B: adds a smartphone proposal video of about 30 seconds. C: 1.5 hours, 150 retouched + smartphone video. D: 2 hours, 100 retouched + an edited video of about 1 minute shot on a DSLR |
| nico nico photo (Hokkaido) | Light ¥55,000 / Standard ¥60,000 / Premium ¥80,000 / Deluxe ¥130,000 | $350–830 | Light: 1 hour, 80 photos, 15-second video, photographer only. Standard: 1 hour, 100 photos, plus an assistant. Premium: 2 hours, 1–2 locations, 130+ photos. Deluxe: 160+ photos, drone video and an edited 60-second video |
| Capture My Japan (all of Japan) | Light ¥60,500 / Standard ¥85,800 / Premium ¥105,600 / Luxury ¥176,000, tax incl. | $385–1,120 | Light: 1 hour, 50 photos, 1 location. Standard: 2 hours, 100 photos. Premium: 3 hours, 150 photos. Luxury: 8 hours, 400 photos. All edited |
| Ippei and Janine Photography (central Tokyo) | Surprise Proposal from ¥95,000 | $600 | Up to 1 hour, 1–2 central Tokyo locations, 90+ edited photos, planning and carrying out "the plan", same-day delivery |
Only Capture My Japan states that its prices include tax; ask the others. The photographer's transport and any entry fees are generally extra. Capture My Japan's proposal page uses the same prices as its regular shoots. Ippei and Janine's FAQ adds that proposals carry a ¥10,000 surcharge; their proposal plan is exactly ¥10,000 more than their 60-minute session (¥85,000), so we assume it's already included, but that's our reading, so confirm it.
Have a good Holiday: lowest price, Chinese- and Korean-speaking photographers
Run by the Tokyo travel company Holiday Travel. Its proposal page says photographers support your planning from start to finish and can stay hidden to capture the moment from a distance, followed by a couple session. It works at shrines, gardens, scenic overlooks, restaurants or a place you choose.

- Not included: entry fees at paid venues (including the photographer's), transport, flowers and props (arranged for an extra fee). If a location needs prior permission, such as a hotel or restaurant, you must get it yourself.
- Rain: if rain is forecast 3 days before or it rains on the day, you can reschedule, change the location or cancel (100% cancellation fee).

A Sapporo-based photographer born in Hokkaido. Capture My Japan: photographers across Japan and permit help
The traveller brand of LOVEGRAPH, a large Japanese photo company. Its proposal page (in English and Traditional Chinese) promises help choosing the timing and hidden spots, and "invisible photography". The site says it has 200+ English-speaking photographers and handles applications for shooting locations.
- Add-ons: bouquets of 12, 30 or 50 stems for ¥16,500, ¥25,300 or ¥36,300 (book 7+ days ahead); choosing a photographer ¥22,000; 3-day express delivery ¥16,500; Mt. Fuji or Hokkaido dispatch fee ¥16,500.
- Delivery: the proposal page says within two weeks; the price list says 1–3 weeks.
- Cancellation: free 11+ days before; 30% at 3–10 days; 50% at 1–2 days; 100% on the day. No fee if the photographer judges it's too rainy. Rescheduling needs 5+ days' notice.
- Late arrival: shortens the shoot; more than 30 minutes late without notice cancels it with no refund.
Ippei and Janine Photography: Tokyo, same-day photos
An English-Japanese photographer duo based in Tokyo since 2006. Their proposal page says they work with you to plan the proposal and photograph the knee-on-the-ground moment, the ring and the reactions that follow. The Surprise Proposal plan covers 1–2 locations in central Tokyo with same-day delivery; locations outside Tokyo's 23 wards are quoted separately.
Also: Happo-en, a Tokyo wedding venue with a Japanese garden, lists a "proposal" option at ¥110,000 for its overseas couples' photo plan (from ¥350,000, tax incl.), without details (site database, October 2026). PRE WEDDING PHOTO JAPAN, a Tokyo photographer, says it offers proposal shoots around Mount Fuji but publishes no proposal price.

Where to propose: what the rules say
A proposal isn't a wedding shoot, but you're still bringing a hired photographer, and some places restrict that.
Proposal in Kyoto
- Kiyomizu-dera: its FAQ says photo shoots using drones, monopods or tripods are prohibited, as are wedding, cosplay and model fashion shoots, and asks visitors not to record for commercial purposes. It doesn't mention proposals specifically, so ask your photographer before choosing it.
- Kyoto city parks require a paid permit for professional shoots; see our kimono photoshoot guide for details.
- We found no official proposal rules for shrines such as Fushimi Inari. That doesn't mean anything goes: let the photographer choose a spot they know is fine.
Proposal in Tokyo
- Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (Ministry of the Environment) is explicit: paying a professional photographer to take personal commemorative photos isn't allowed. Even unpaid personal shoots can't use tripods or reflectors during busy periods (in 2026, March 19 to April 26 across the garden and November 1–15 in the Japanese garden).
- Cherry blossom parks: PRE WEDDING PHOTO JAPAN says almost all of Tokyo's famous blossom parks don't accept wedding photo applications during cherry blossom season, and that permit fees across Japan range from a few hundred yen to ¥100,000.
- Ippei and Janine's plan covers central Tokyo (usually within the Yamanote line). Their FAQ asks you to pay one extra admission for the photographer where entry is charged.
Proposal at Mount Fuji
Have a good Holiday lists Arakurayama Sengen Park (the Chureito Pagoda), Lake Kawaguchi and Oishi Park, and Fujiyoshida's Honcho Street as photo spots. Capture My Japan charges a ¥16,500 dispatch fee for the Fuji area. We couldn't find official photo rules for these spots, so ask the photographer about permits. Whether Fuji is visible is decided by the clouds on the day; in our view, keep a spare day if the mountain matters to you.
Proposal in Hokkaido
- Farm Tomita (Furano's best-known lavender farm) bans photography for commercial purposes, tripods, drones and photos in wedding dresses. In our reading, a hired photographer working there would likely count as commercial; ask before planning a lavender-field proposal there.
- Biei: the town's tourism association says the hills are all private farmland. Never walk into fields, including snow-covered ones, and photograph only from paved or cleared public roads. Drones are prohibited in principle.
- nico nico photo's proposal page suggests snowy trees, lavender fields and lakesides at sunset, and works around Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei, Niseko and Lake Toya. More in our Hokkaido wedding photos guide.
Best season for a proposal in Japan
| Season | What to expect (official data) |
|---|---|
| Cherry blossoms | JMA normal full bloom: Tokyo Mar 31, Kyoto Apr 4, Hakodate May 2, Sapporo May 6. In 2026: Tokyo Mar 28, Kyoto Mar 30, Hakodate Apr 20, Sapporo Apr 24 |
| Lavender (Furano) | Farm Tomita: early varieties colour from late June, peak in early to mid-July |
| Autumn leaves | JNTO's 2026 forecast: Sapporo Oct 28, Tokyo Nov 28. Kyoto's main spots usually peak mid-to-late November (Kyoto City tourism site) |
| Snow (Sapporo) | JMA normal deepest snow: 47 cm in December, 76 cm in January, 95 cm in February, 82 cm in March |
Bloom dates move every year (2026 came early). Famous spots are crowded in peak season, which makes hiding harder; nico nico photo suggested an early-morning slot for a Hakodate cherry blossom proposal for that reason.
Planning the surprise: practical tips
The service details above come from official sites. The tips below are our suggestions, based on what those services describe; agree the details with your photographer.
- Book early enough. Capture My Japan takes shoot dates up to 180 days ahead; Have a good Holiday confirms within 48 hours. nico nico photo describes a proposal arranged the day before, but bouquets need notice: Capture My Japan asks for 7 days.
- Agree on a signal. In our view, the simplest is a fixed time and a fixed spot, plus a backup: a message to the photographer just before you kneel, or a pre-agreed gesture such as putting on a hat. nico nico photo exchanged outfit photos with the proposer beforehand and used live location sharing to find them.
- Know the exact spot. Ask for a map showing where to stand and which way your partner should face.
- Give your partner a reason to dress up, such as a dinner reservation afterwards (our suggestion).
- Ring and flowers: keep the ring box in a front pocket, not a bag. If buying flowers in Japan is awkward, add the service's bouquet (Capture My Japan from ¥16,500, nico nico photo from ¥15,000).
- Be on time. Late arrival cuts your shooting time at every service, and Capture My Japan cancels without refund after 30 minutes without notice.
- Plan for weather. Rain rules differ (see the table). If you're only in Japan for a few days, a service with free rescheduling or free rain cancellation is the safer choice.
After the yes: pre-wedding photos and weddings
Many couples come back to Japan for a pre-wedding shoot or a ceremony. Compare plans in our kimono photoshoot guide, the Japan elopement guide and the Okinawa wedding guide, or check whether a wedding in Japan is legally binding.
